Think Wise Thoughts
The Holy Word tells us to think on certain things. Why? Is it because God wants to dictate our every thought? No, of course not, but He is telling us how to avoid the pitfalls Satan sets for us and also how to live our lives in peace. Philippians 4:8 (LB) says, “…Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others: Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about.” Years ago I wondered why it was so important that I dwell on only good thoughts, and as years rolled by, I realized our minds are the open door to what we will do, how we act, what we say, and will determine our future. When you put Philippians 4:8 together with Proverbs 23:7 it all makes sense. “For as he (a man) thinketh in his heart, so is he…” The things you meditate on will become a driving force in your life and you will gravitate toward it, good or evil. The more you allow desire, lust, sin of any kind to dominate your thinking the stronger it becomes in your life. If a person does not take charge of his or her thinking, it will become a stronghold, it will dominate your thinking and actions. As you continue to allow a wrong thought to remain, and you keep thinking about it, you will begin to look for an opportunity to fulfill your desire. I have applied the negative side to this scripture, but I did it for a reason, and that being that most people are not plagued with only good thoughts, because the Devil is always around tempting us to sin, and that is the way he does it. First a thought, then meditation on that thought, then the action. Let me use this example. Take child molestation that seems to be running rampant in the world today. Someone doesn’t just wake up one morning and think I will commit this crime today, no, first comes the thought, probably some child porn, and as this person allows these thoughts to remain, soon they are looking for some innocent child to harm. This is just one example, but you can look at all the sins that mankind does on a daily basis and if you could take a look at what drives them, what they think about daily, you will find that it all started with a thought that they entertained. It may be just a simple desire as making money, which is alright, but you can take it to the extreme, and commit a crime to get money, or lust after it, or allow the spirit of greed to take charge of your thought life. When this happens you are not being directed by the Spirit of the Lord, Satan has a stronghold in your life. I want to use one other example that most people can relate to. Everyone has seen the commercials on television, that continually flood our minds over and over about how much you need to purchase their product. They are sending us a message that tells us that we cannot live without what they are offering. If you are not careful you will begin to think “that’s right I really need to send for that item”. The people that work in the world of advertisement know the power of suggestion and they use it successfully. They enemy does the same thing with suggestions he talks to you about. If he can get you to meditate on it long enough, he knows you will act on his thought. Listen…danger lies ahead for those who don’t police their thoughts.” If any area of your life seems to be out of control, all in not lost. God has the answer to any situation that has taken up residence in our lives if we will follow His instructions. II Corinthians 10:4-5 (KJ) - “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
There is a battle raging in the world today and it is against every Child of God. It may surprise you but we, (Christians) are behind enemy lines and we must use our weapons that Christ gave us. He tells us in these scriptures who our enemies are. They are Satan and his forces using man to do their biding. But the good news is we have weapons to use that enforce the victory Jesus purchased with His Blood. We have the Word of God, His name to use and also the Blood of Jesus that will overcome every evil force. Revelation 12:11 says, “And they (the Believer) overcame him (satan) by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony (what the Word says).” We are to use our weapons when we find ourselves under attack by the enemy. The first place we look for the attack is in our minds. He puts a thought there and then watches for our reaction. Do we destroy it by replacing it with good thoughts which come from God’s Word, or do we allow it to dwell in our minds, do we continue to meditate on it until it dominates us? We have to make the choice. Recognize where your thoughts are coming from. Many years ago I heard a preacher make a very wise statement. He said, “Be careful what you put in your spiritual mouths”. He meant, don’t allow your mind to become a garbage pit, keep the trash out. What the Father wants us to do is meditate on good things, protect our hearts (spirit). Proverbs 4:20-25 “My son, attend (listen) to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings (pay attention). Let then NOT DEPART from thine eyes; keep they in the midst of thine heart (meditate on them). For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh (here is healing). Keep (protect) thy heart (spirit) with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” We protect our heart or spirit by meditation on the Word. What we meditate on is what we will act on. Good or evil as I said before. God wants us to have a great life, one filled with all good things, and He tells us how to achieve it in these scriptures. Make sure you meditate on what is good and right, clean and moral, loving and peaceful. When you do it will prosper you in every area of your life. Build the Word of God into your spirit, learn how to speak the Word against the evil one, take charge of your thinking, you don’t have to think on things that go against the Word, things that upset you, things that are contrary to the laws of God. Proverbs 25:28 (KJ) - “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
In Bible days, the wall around their city was their protection against their enemy. God is telling us that if we don’t rule our spirits, minds, and bodies, we are open to attack from our enemy and we are without protection. If you want to keep your life protected you must keep the wall around it in good shape Our strength comes from the Lord and our protection comes from the armor of God, therefore, put it on and keep yourself safe while the enemy is on the prowl. A personal word from me to you.I woke up this morning with a very strong impression that we must find our prayer closet again and get busy interceding for those who are lost, and for those around the world who are facing perilous times. I believe we are at a very crucial time in history and we as Children of God must make every moment count. I ask you to make a quality decision to talk to God daily and listen to His direction. He tells us in scripture that He will direct our path and I believe the time for that to become our pray is now!
